Backgrounds and Texture...a card tutorial!

Hiya! It's Lisa Henke here with you today.  So happy to be sharing a little photo tutorial with you. I need to give a shout out to Angie for giving me the inspiration to try a painting technique. She does some beautiful work with all kinds of mediums. 

I pulled out some white acrylic paint and decided to try it. I also wanted to use a little more of that canvas I have in my stash and I'll show you how easy it is to color with copics.

Let's get started.

Once again, if I had some fancy video equipment, this would be a bit more fun,

but I'm an advocate for use what you have....so it's a photo tut from me today :)

What you'll need:

white acrylic paint

re-inkers

paint brush or sponge dauber

canvas

copic friendly ink

copic markers

ippity stamps, of course!

Today I'm using the birds from

any embellishments you need to finish your card.

Let's Get Started.....

1.Start with little blobs (dotcha love my technical terms, lol) of white acrylic paint. I don't have a fancy holder for them, so I just use a scrap piece of plastic. Add a drop or two of your re-inker of choice and mix. Keep in mind,  your paint color will be much lighter than your re-inker, since you are adding it to white. Want a darker, more intense color, add more ink.

2.Using your sponge dauber (or paint brush), add some quick back and forth movements adding paint to your card base or card stock.  Feel free to blend your colors are you move from one shade to the next.

3.Let your paint dry or use a heat gun to speed up the drying process.  Set aside.

4.Next, move on to your canvas piece. Using a black ink that will work with Copics (I use Momento Tuxedo black) stamp your image. Let dry a minute.

5. Color with Copics (here is a looksie and some of the new colors that came out during Winter CHA). It's easy and makes a great finished look.

6. Stamp your sentiment. I added two colors of ink to my sentiment. Simply mask part of the sentiment to ink up with the first ink color. I then found it easy to add the second color with careful placement of the ink pad.

7. Distress the edges, sew around panel, add a strip of designer paper, and add buttons and ribbon.

8.Lay every thing out before adhering the layers and embellies down. This helps me get an idea of proper balance throughout my card.

Adhere everything down and your done.  Here's my finished card. I hope you'll feel inspired to work with some mixed media, acrylic paint, especially and maybe throw in some canvas with copic coloring. If I can do, so can you! Thanks for stopping by,  today!

Paper Rose Flower Tutorial

Happy Hip Hop Thursday!! Karen her to share a tutorial with you on how to make my version of Tim Holtz's Grunge Rose Flower!  So, let's get started...

Paper Rose Flower Tutorial

Supplies Used:  Quilling Tool, Helmar's 450 Quick Dry Adhesive, 1 1/2" Circle Scallop Punch from Paper Shapers (EK Success), and  Five Petal Flower Punch by Marvy Uchida.  Not shown in photo, but you will need a pair of scissors, a pencil, and Designer Paper (this tutorial is showing Webster's "Lullably Lane - The Arrival), and/or cardstock!  

Step 1: Punch out 3/ea of the 6-petal flowers from your paper.  Punch out 1/ea of the circle scallop flower from your paper.

Step 2: Using your scissors, cut out these specific petals from each 6-petal punched flower.  Don't worry if your flowers are not cut out perfectly..after all natural flowers are not perfect!  So, don't stress on it!

Step 3: Use Helmar 450 Quick Dry to adhere all these pieces. 

To start, take one of the flowers that has two petals cut out.  Layering one petal onto another petal, glue together to create one 3-petal flower (left). 

Now, take the other flower that has one petal cut out.  Layering one petal onto another petal, glue together to create one 4-petal flower (middle). 

Lastly, take remaining flower that has one petal cut out. Layering just slightly onto one of the petals, glue together to create one 5-petal flower (right).

Step 4: Take the fat part of your quilling tool, or any other object that might resemble a quilling tool, and fold under all the petals of all your flower pieces.  You can do this by hand as well, or scrunch with your fingers in addition.  Just throwing out suggestions, so you can form your rose the way you wish!!

Step 5: Time to layer your flowers inside of each other, using Helmar 450 Quick Dry Adhesive!

Start with the 5-petal, then layer the 4-petal, and lastly, the 3-petal flower into each other, using Helmar each time!!  It dries quickly, so once that happens...you can gently squeeze, scrunch, and manipulate your flower to your liking!  Set this aside now. 

Step 6: Take your circle scallop punched flower and turn over to the backside.  Freehand drawing time. Start from the outter side of the punch, and draw a circular motion, as shown in the photo below.  Take your scissors and cut what you just penciled in.  Lastly, take the quilling tool and insert into the punch as shown below.

Step 7:  Start turning your flower with your quilling tool.  Now for this specific flower center, I only wanted the "scalloped" part of that punch to be used, so I stopped right rolling the flower at the point where there is no more scallop showing.  Using your scissors, now cut at this section, and adhere that last strip of paper to the rolled scallop.  Once dried, gently remove the quilling tool!

Step 8: Your center flower should now look like this below.  Again, scrunch and manipulate to your liking!  You can make this center tight or let it go a little looser.

Step 9: Take your Helmar 450 Quick Dry and put a dab of that glue into your main flower.  Next, insert the smaller center scalloped flower! Voila..ta da!!  What fun and a lovely flower!!

Here is the card that I made  for  today's Unity's Hip Hop Thursday!!

In the photo below is another close up of the same type of flower I made on another card.  That time I just "doubled" all the layers, so you have a 6-layer flower.  Then I used a regular circle punch (no scallops), and made the same type of center.  Lastly, I took my Helmar V2 Vellum spray and sprayed that flower and gently sprinkled Martha Stewart fine glitter.  In a matter of minutes the glitter adheres and you can respray with the V2 to make sure the glitter does not fall off!  Also, this flower was spritzed with Glimmer Mist prior to punching the flowers and creating the flower!

Tell us a little about yourself. {Family, location, background, job, kids, etc.}
I’m originally from the Northeastern US, growing up in Maine on a farm (yes, I know how to milk a cow!) then moving to Western Massachusetts for high school and college. I took a trip to Key West over one spring break and totally loved it! So, the second day after graduating from college, I packed my car and drove to South Florida with my 2 cats! I waitressed until I found a job 3 months later using what I had gone to college for - Mechanical Engineering. Here I am, living in the Sunshine State 20 years later with the love of my life Phil, 2 cats and the warmth! My day job is still engineering which keeps my finger on technology and I craft whenever I can.
How did you first get involved in stamping?

It was around 1997 and I attended a Stampin’ Up! Party/class. I was hooked!
What is your stamping style?

Ohhhh, that’s a tough one. I go simple at times, but I love to layer and embellish. I love to heat emboss – not sure if that would be considered a style!
Tell us about your creative process.
I frequently use sketches as a starting point. From there, who knows where it goes!
What is your favorite {ippity} stamp set and why?

I love Fishy Philosophy! What’s funny is that I haven’t even used it yet! I love the design of every image in the set and it “goes” with where I live by the ocean.
How often do you stamp?

As much as I can. It usually works out to at least 4 days a week for at least a little time.
How long does it take you to make a project you are happy with? It varies. Sometimes I see it in my head and it comes out even better in a short time! Other times I need to let it sit overnight before I finish it off to where I’m happy with it.

What does your craft room look like? {messy, clean, etc.}

I’m so proud of myself! I usually clean up after every project, but I just got some new storage containers that really helped tidy up my whole area.

Fresh Idea Friday With Maria

Happy Friday!!

I'm so excited that this week is drawing to a close. The weather has been BEAUTIFUL here in Colorado and the kids have a three day weekend, I can't wait to get some fresh air after being cooped up this winter. Days like today make me crave spring, hopefully the snow stays gone :)

I decided to do a scrapbook layout for today's post. I used some of the NEW papers from the Winter release and WOW are they amazing!!

Here are a few detail shots:

The polka dots on the small flower are from Love In Return. I used three of the Blossom nestabilities to create the flower. The largest is a coffee cozy from Starbucks :) The scallop stamp is from Sweet Thoughts Of Spring.

I still haven't journaled on this layout (it's always the hardest part of scrapbooking for me) but I went ahead and stamped
the journal box from Love in Return so that it's ready when I am.I used the polka dots from Love in Return again, this time to create a subtle background for my title. The letter stamps are from the super fun set Alphabettically Adorable.

I LOVE mixing and matching all the {ippity} sets! These stamps are so versatile and one of the best things things about {ippity} is that they ALL work together....I LOVE that :)
